Wellington Electric Boat Building Company

With a focus on electric boat building, we specialise in the construction of ultra-light weight, carbon-fibre composite catamarans with high energy efficiency and a 100% battery electric power train for zero emissions operation.

We can deliver vessels from 15m to 22m in length. We work closely with our partners in naval architecture, boat design and marine electrical engineering to deliver vessels to meet your operational requirements.

We were established in late 2018. Our first contract is to deliver a 135 passenger public transport ferry for East By West Ferries in Wellington, New Zealand. It will operate on the Queen’s Wharf to Days Bay route at speeds up to 20 knots.
We also provide services in maintenance and repair of composite vessel structures and recently completed an upgrade of East By West’s City Cat ferry on budget and ahead of schedule.

Fraser Foote is Wellington Electric Boat Building Company’s managing director. Previously, as owner for 20 years of Northland Contract Boat Builders Ltd, Fraser manufactured 25 catamarans and several super yachts, using composite construction technology. Fraser has also worked under contract to the Oracle America’s Cup Team. He has extensive experience in composite construction, boat repairs, refits and insurance work.

Jeremy Ward founded East by West Ferries in Wellington, a ferry operation that has carried commuters and tourists across the Wellington Harbour since 1989.

Jeremy made the ambitious decision in 2018 to commission the first fully electric ferry in the Southern Hemisphere, to be built locally in Wellington. This led to the establishment of Wellington Electric Boat Building Company, which is now a team of 10 boat builders and apprentices. Check out our Projects page for updates on the build of East by West's new ferry.
